Background: Asthma care is focused on routinely controlling symptoms and lung function impairment in the long term. Although the evidences from systematic reviews support Chinese medicine in improving asthma effectively, acupuncture point used needs to be clarified for further clinical application. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the effect of acupuncture points on asthma at the remitting phase in terms of lung function, immune function, and quality of life. Methods: Seven electronic databases were used to search studies. Data was collected based on asthma patients in the remitting phase (P), acupuncture points interventions (I), forced expiratory volume in 1 second, peak expiratory flow, immune globulin E, asthma quality of life (O), and randomized controlled trial (D). The Cochrane risk of bias tool was used to assess methodologic quality. Results: A total of 38 articles was included, with 3,125 patients. The interventions involved herbal patching, acupuncture, catgut/needle embedding, and injection. A total of 42 acupuncture points were used, and the most frequently used ones in order were Feishu, Dingchuan, Tiantu, Danzhong, and Zusanli. Statistical significances were found in all outcomes. Conclusions: This study supports that acupuncture points interventions improve lung function, immune function, and quality of life for asthma patients in the remitting phase. Feishu, Dingchuan, and Tiantu are the first option of acupuncture points. Other acupuncture points can be targeted based on the type of interventions. |
