This article describes the emergency care provided for an aboriginal woman admitted to an emergency clinic because of repeatedly suffering from domestic violence. The authors collected all information through observation, interviews, direct care, physical assessment, and follow-up visits. Based on the overall assessment from the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects, the author found that the patient had acute pain, ineffective coping, and insomnia. Through active care, empathy, and encouragement by the author, the patient shared her inner feelings| by learning ways to divert attention, the patient was relieved from her pain. Additionally, the author provided information on domestic violence support groups, guided self-protection methods for violent incidents, and assisted with improving sleep. The patient was discharged for the emergency room. During follow-up visits, the patient could state self-protection techniques for prevention and response to violence and mentioned that her insomnia had improved. It is hoped that this experience will provide emergency caregivers with a reference when caring for patients suffering from domestic violence in the future. |
