Gongsun Longzi: A New Translation with Expository Notes

《公孫龍子》是今傳先秦名家具完整思想唯一的一部著作。本文繼續前人對此書的整理工作，旨在提供此書一個簡便讀本。正文每篇逐句翻譯，並加解說以明其理據。傳本正文依次為《白馬論》、《指物論》、《通變論》、《堅白論》、《名實論》五篇，本文於其篇次稍作更動。又有《跡府》一篇，則是後人所記公孫龍與孔子後裔孔穿辯論事，傳本列為第一。本文於此篇只闡釋與《白馬論》有關部分的文字，作為附錄，置於最後。

The Gongsun Longzi 公孫龍子 is the only surviving systematic philosophical document from the pre-Qin School of Names (名家). It consists of an introductory chapter on the life of Gong-sun Long and five philosophical essays: On the White Horse, On Pointing, On Understanding Change, On Hard and White, and On Names and Actualities. This study presents the text from each of these five essays (in a somewhat different order from the traditional edition) with a line-for-line translation followed by expository notes, and some textual reconstructions. The biographical first chapter is placed at the end as an appendix, together with expository notes on the section that pertains to the ''white horse'' argument.
