The study tries to explore how lesbian parents help their children build family identities while living in a society which is still not entirely friendly to same-sex families. Through interviewing 23 lesbian parents, the author has found that lesbian parents' self-identities are essential for helping their children build self and family identities. For lesbian stepparents, it is important to establish clear roles in order to help the children build their family identity. Further, lesbian parents have concerns for the welfare of the children in deciding whether to come out publicly as a same-sex family or not, and their decisions on this may vary. Last, most lesbian parents join same-sex parents' communities, which not only support lesbian parents, but also their children. Following on these findings, recommendations are made as to how lesbian parents can help their children build family identities; public policy and future studies are suggested. |
