This study aims to explore the process of teacher collaborative planning, the implementation and outcomes of a service learning project of students in the Department of Early Child Care in a university of science and technology. The course combines visual art instruction, Orff Schulwerk and collaborative instruction of preschool art teacher education courses to develop the service learning project “community parent-child education by art dragon boat festival by diversity of art” which was implemented in the community and the outcomes evaluated. The overall service learning project planning, execution and data collection lasted for 10 months. The data collected included records of teachers’ discussions, instructional journals, instructional evaluation, design sheets of artistic activities, students’ reflections, and questionnaires of parents which were then further analyzed. According to research findings, (1) teacher team members’ positive cooperation and in-depth dialogue among teacher team members and between teachers and students are the success keys of the overall service learning project. (2) Practice of the service learning project of this study enhances diverse art courses learning of students in the Department of Early Child Care. (3) The service learning project of this study allows students in the Department of Early Child Care to experience the guidance of community parenting education activities in order to apply their acquired skills and knowledge, and to enhance professional reflection and growth. |
