This article described the nursing experience of using empowerment to assist a family who took care of a schizophrenia patient. The author collected subjective and objective information using participant observation and interview while providing nursing care, home visit, and phone follow-up during the time period October 12 2009 to June 2 2010. A holistic Friedman family assessment and nursing problems were established as perceptual alteration of a patient, overload of caregiver’s stress of a patient’s mother, and disabled family role. The author listened attentively to and cared about the chief caregiver so as to establish a trust relationship, and made use of the empowerment to assist her to examine herself, and then re-established and re-confirmed her caring ability, supported each other by family members to improve the disabled family role. |
