In a previous paper (Liu, 1963), the process of classical conditioning was demonstrated to consititute an essential portion of the instrumental runway acquisition process. On the other hand, instrumental learning plays an important role in classical conditioning. For, consider eyeblink conditioning. The occurrence of conditioned eyelid response during the acquisition period apparently enables S to escape partially the unconditioned stimulus airpuff. Therefore, the occurrence of the conditioned response is instrumental in avoiding partially the noxious stimulus airpuff. Complete avoidance of the noxious stimulus happens in the case of instrumental avoidance conditioning in the shuttle box situation. The present experiment studies the role of the instrumental component in classical conditioning employing the runway situation. |
