The influence of two plant growth regulators, Alar and Gibberellic acid on the growth and sex expression of cucumber were investigated in the greenhouse. Two cucumber cultivars, Kaga-setsunari and Kariba-setsunari, were treated under long day and natural day length. The concentrations used for Alar were 0, 2000, 4000, 0000ppm GA were 0, 100, 200ppm They were sprayed once on foliage at 16 days after seed germination. The results were summarized as follows: 1. Effects on the development of plants: with high concentration, plants treated with Alar spray showed a marked retardation of plant height, the number of nodes and internode length GA spray showed promotion of plant growth than controled, but it is notremark-able than that of Alar treated. In the combination of Alar and GA, the plant size was between those of GA and Alar treatments. The size of stem was compared in every chemical treatment. The stems of Alar treatments were thicker than that of GA treatments, the stems of. Alar 6000ppm was the largest in thickness and GA l00ppm was the smallest. 2. Effects on sex expression: In the period of investigation, the temperature in greenhouse was above 45℃. The sex expression of cucumber was not normal. Many nodes were not flowered at long day treatment, many male and female flowers were found at natural day treatment in both cultivars. The results suggest that Alar was responsible in Kariba cultivar for promoting female flower development, and GA in Kaga cultivar promoted male flower development. The plant size and sex expression of cucumber with plant growth regulators were discussed from physiological and histological points. |
