Watermelon scions were top inarched to five stocks, that were calabash gourd, native pumpkin, Japanese hybridized pumpkin, wax gourd and vegetable sponge for testing their affinity, vitality, and disease resistance. The calabash gourd was easiest to operate, and the native pumpkin, Japanese hybridized pumpkin and wax gourd were difficult because their inner tubing of stalk were too small or too large. The growth vitality of seedling of vegetable sponge was the best, calabash gourd and vegetable sponge were the best when they were planted in the field. Mosaic disease was found on the graft seedlings of vegetable sponge and Japanese hybridized pumpkin. Fusarium wilt was also found on graft seedling of Japanese hybridized pumpkin and wax gourd were the worst. |
