STUDTES ON BIRD'S PEAR TREES IN TAIWAN (First Report)

1.在本省鳥梨，據調查結果可分為兩大類，一種枝條直立性缺枝剌，當年生嫩梢帶黃綠色，葉呈濶橢圓形或濶卵形，葉片較大，而果實較小者為大葉種鳥梨，另一種為枝條平展性，時帶枝剌，當年生嫩梢帶赤綠色，葉呈卵圓形或長卵形，葉片較小而果實較大者為小葉種鳥梨。2.鳥梨在本省一年有兩次生長期，第一次生長期在2月中旬至6月上旬。第二次生長期在9月中旬至11月上旬。3.在0度C潮濕環境下1,000-2,000小時儲藏，其種子發芽整齊，且發芽率可至25%以上（種子最高發芽率在36.11%），如在室內乾燥環境下儲藏達3個月以上者，其種子發芽率可降至6%以下。故貯藏鳥梨之種子，不可任其過于乾燥。4.鳥梨休眠枝扞插時期宜在12-2月，栽培管理優良者成活率可至80%以上，如在0°C及潮濕環境下200-1,000小時儲藏，不但使其生長勢均勻且可延長其扞插時期，又鳥梨綠枝在露天噴霧下扦插較在蔭棚雙層鉢內扞插成活率高。5.鳥梨在本省芽接時期宜在6-9月，切接時期宜在12-2月為佳，成活率均可在80-100%6.繁殖鳥梨時，以用插木繁施為有利。

1.According to the results of a survey on Taiwan, China, there are two kinds of Bird's Pear: (1) Branches and branchiets upright, thorniess on the top of branch, the young shoots yellowgreenish color, leaves oval or ovoid broad, larger Jeaves and small fruit, this one is called Big Leaves Bird's Pear; (2) Branches and branchlets spreading sometime with thorns on the top of the branch, the young shoots red-greenish color, leaves ovate or Jong, ovate, small leaves and 1arger fruit, this one is called Little Leaves Bird's Pear. 2.There are two growth periods pf Bird's Pear on Taiwan. The first growth period is from the middle of February to the beginning of June. The second period is from the middle of September to the end of November. 3.Storing under 0°C and moist condition for 1,000-2,000 hours will show uniform germination of seeds and the percentage of germination may be more than 25% (the highest of germination may be 36.11%). Storing under home temperature end dry condition for 3 months, the percentage of seed garmination may be decreased to 6%. 4.The suitab!e cutting period, the dormant branch is from December to February. Under good management the livability percentage may be more than 80%. If the branch is placed under 0° C and moist conditions for 200-1,000 hours. There is not only unifoum growth but these conditions will prolong the cutting period. By sprinkling under sunlight, the livability of the greenwood cutttings of Bird's Pear is higher than those which are place in two layer pots in the lath house. 5.The suitable bud grafting period on Taiwan is from The first of Jum to the beginning of September and the suitable scion grafting period is from December to February, The livability percent in both bud and scion grafting, under proper conditions, is 80-100%.
