This experiment was carried out in the Fruit Garden of the Horticultural Department of Taiwan Provincial Agricultural College since May 1958 through May 1960 The direct seeding of Solo and Mexico papaya as Well as once transplanting, twice transplanting and trice transplanting were applied as four treatments in this experiment. From the results of this experiment. we obtained the following conclusion: The direct seeded papaya plants showed faster development, earlier flower-buds appearing and fruiting than those transplanted. The locality of the first fruiting was on a higher position of the stem and they took a shorter time to mature, from seeding to harvesting they took about 330 days. As to the strength of resisting against typhoon, direct seeded Solo showed weakest resistance in the garden, and the direct seeded Mexico showed much stronger than the direct seeded Solo variety. On the contrary, all the plants which were transplanted had gradually become dwarfer. Especially, those transpnted trice, the height of the plants were the dwarfest, and the stems were the thinner; the flower-buds appearing, fruiting and havesting were later than those of the other 3 treatments. They had satisfactory strength of resisting against the fierce wind and the production was abundant. |
