According to the experiences obtained in the past two years from carnation culture on the upland region in Taiwan, it has been realized that the quality of cut-flowers produced in the later part of the blooming season became comparatively poor, therefore we decided to investigate the effect of organic fertilizer and the number of side-shoots on the qualities of cut-flowers. Results are as follows: (1) On the diameter of the flower, -although the difference in effect between the plots with large quantity of fertilizers and those With small quantity of fertilizers was insignificant, yet the difference between the plots with fertilizers and those with no fertilizer at all was notable. (2) The optimum number of side-shoots was found to be 10. That is to say that plants with 12. or 14 side-shoots had their flower diameters and the thickness of their flower stems reduced, and accordingly their market value; while those with 6 or 8 side-shoots had their quality more or less the same as those with 10 side-shoots. (3) The size of the flower diameter bears a close relationship with the thickness and the length of the flower stem, which means that plants with large flower diameter have long as well as thick Stems. |
