For decades, citrus growers in Tai wan have almost used similar rootstocks exclusively for certain commercial scion varieties. They are: Sunki (Citrus sunki Sakurai) to Ponkan (Citrus reticulata Blanco), Tonkan (Citrus tankaii Hayata) and sweet oranges; trifoliate orange to Satsuma mandarin (Citrus imshitt Marcovitch) and kumquat (Fortunella margarita Swingle); and pummel<> (or shaddock) to lemon, pummelo and grapefruit (1, 2, 3). Tanaka reported in 1929 that various rootstocks such as trifoliate orange, Sunki ad Calamondin (Citrus microcarpa Bunge) appeared to be suited for Ponkan and he also recommended to make trial budding on Ponki or Cleopatra mandarin (4). However frifoliate orange and Calamondin are rarely used as rootstock to Ponkan and Tonkan, and no test result on·Cleopatra mandarin rootstocic has been reported in Taiwan as far. |
