To investigate the effect of leaf number on the plant height, circumference, hand number/bunch, finger number/bunch, bunch weight, green life, shelf life and Brix, the leaves of banana trees were removed weekly or at shooting. Plant height, circumference, hand number and finger number/bunch, and bunch weight might reduce with decreasing leaf number. Plant height and circumference were not affected at shooting when the banana tree had more than 5 leaves during the whole growing season; hand number and finger number/bunch were not significantly reduced when the trees had more than 7 leaves; bunch weight remained normal when the tree had more than 9 leaves. More leaves were maintained on the tree before shooting and defoliation was made at shooting stage, the results showed that bunch weight might not be reduced when the tree had more than 7 leaves. Shelf life of banana fruit might not relate to leaf number. While green life might not be affected at tree having more than 9 leaves during whole growing season, but not relate to the leaf number at shooting when the tree maintained more than 13 leaves before shooting. Brix of fruit increased with increasing leaf number; the Brix was not affected when the tree had more than 9 leaves during whole growing season or the tree had more than 13 leaves before shooting and maintained more than 7 leaves after shooting. |
