The growth curve of carambola fruits as judged by cumulative weight was of the simple sigmoid type. Ethylene evolution and respiration rate increased during ripening of mature fruits. The time of the increase corresponded to the time of fruit yellowing and was prior to that of fruit rib yellowing. The increase of ethylene evolution and respiration rate were unexceptionally found during fruit ripening in 5 tested cultivars or selection lines. Postharvest rise in respiratory rates was noted at every stage of ontogeny. The response of mature fruits to continuous, transient or intermittent treatment of different concentration of exogenous ethylene showed the characteristics of climacteric fruits, i.e., earlier onset of climacteric rise with same climacteric pattern. Exogenous application of ethylene induced marked production of endogenous ethylene. Therefore, carambola is suggested as a climacteric fruit. |
