Five tropical leafy vegetables which are generally considered to be relatively heat tolerant were included in an experiment involving different levels of nitrogen. These were water convolvulus (Ipomoea aquatica Forsk.), leaf mustard (Brassica juncea Cosson), edible amaranth (Amaranthus mangostanus L.). golden Pai-Tsai (Brassica chinensis Linn). And Chinese kale (Brassica alboglabra Bailey). Using growth curves, changes in leaf area, leaf/(leaf+stem) ration, and protein content, I was able to determine the appropriate harvest time for these five leafy vegetables when grown under tropical monsoon conditions. Nitrogen increased the growth and protein contents of the five vegetables. Nitrogen fertilization increased the production and protein contents of these crops under the experimental conditions. The rate of contents of these crops under the experimental conditions. The rate of nitrogen application in this experiment showed that 200 kg N/ha will be sufficient for the ideal production requirements of the five tropical leafy greens. |
