The growth of the fruiting body of Agaricus bisporus #543 showed a typical sigmoid curve. The height of the carpophore and diameter of the pileus reached their maximum velocity between the stage when the pileus began to open and until it became flat. The detailed study of the growth region showed that only a narrow zone at the top of the stipe, between its attachment to the pileus and ring was where vigorous growth was taking place. In the pileus, the greatest expansion took place at its periphery, and there was little or no expansion in its central portion. Stipe section, from the growing zone elongated more rapidly than form any other part. Cell elongation in the growing zone of the stipe was roughly parallel to that of the fruiting body. |
