Asparagus was cultivated by using sand culture in phytotron. All growth factors except temperature were kept constant. Three temperature treatments were set at 20/15, 25/20 and 30/25 ℃, day/night diurnally throughout the growing period. A remarkable periodical change of shoot/root ratio was observed. The duration of one period were 6, 4 and 3 months respectively. The trend of the changes of sugar content in the roots coincided with the periodical pulse of shoot/root ratio. The observed phenomena suggest that there are alternative dominance of two operative systems i.e. consumption of storage during new vegetative growth and formation of storage as the shoot maturing, which resulted in the characteristic sine curve of asparagus whole plant growth. |
