A indigenous pear of Taiwan, Pyrus koehnei, has been grown to evaluate the growth rate, tree expansion, branching, seed dormancy and powdery mildew resistance. Cold hardiness was evaluated at NCGR, OR, USA. The evergreen pear has higher growth rate, more branching number and wider angle, higher resistance to prowdery mildew and less seed dormancy than the other varieties. All these characteristics show a potential as a substitution for 'Hang-shan' pear in the forcing culture using flower bud grafting. |
