Two processing tomato, TM 103 and peto 86, were treated with different rates of ethephon 16 days and 21 days before the first harvest. Ethephon treatment significantly increased the ripen fruit yield of the first harvest. Treated with ethephon concentrations of 250, 500, 1000 and 2000 ppm showed a linear increased in yield. Ethephon treatment did not increase the ripen fruit yield in the second harvest which harvested 14 days later after first harvest, but the green fruit yield was reduced. Ethephon treatment had 12.5% increase of ripen fruit compared to control (no ethephon treatment), but there was no difference in total yield. Ethephon did not affect the ripen fruit size in the first harvest, however, the ripen fruit size was significantly reduced in the second harvest. Fruit processing quality is not affected by ethephon. The optimum concentration for the two cultivars was 1000 ppm. |
