Effects of shading on the growth of aerial shoot and rhizome in Polygonatum odoratum 'Variegatum' were conducted at Mei-feng area and in Taipei. Aerial shoot length decreased with increasing light integral from 0.4 to 1.2MJ m^(-2)d^(-1), then remained almost constant. Current seasonal growth in aerial shoot dry weight, leaf area and leaf number were little affected by shading treatments. All treated plants produced leaves with between 5.4% and 12% leaf area variegated. Shading levels of 35%-70% under plastic greenhouse conditions would be suitable for cut leaves production as aerial shoots were longer but stiff. Under plastic greenhouse without shading would be best for rhizome production as the plants had a higher photosynthetic rate and presumably, more nutrients were assimilated for new rhizome growth. |
