The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of landscaping the urban embankment and the riverfront on the user's visual preference. Computer simulation technique was used to compose thirty-six sets of photographs to simulate the scenes of the riverfront which consisted of three sty les of river front development (less developed, highly developed, and those in between), four types of embankment landscaping (ungreenery, partial greenery, total greenery, and wall painting) and four kinds of greenery (grass , shrub, tree , and multilayered plant) on the medium and highly developed river front . The photographs were rated by the 'field-experiencing' users of the river side park according to their visual preference. The major results are summarize d as follows: 1. The landscaping types of embankment and the riverfront have significant influences on respondent's visual preference. 2. Different landscaping types of embankment have effect on respondent's visual preference while the variable, kinds of greenery on the riverfront, are controlled. 3. Two characteristics, 'professional training in the field of landscape' and 'the main recreational activity engaged in the park' have significant influences on visual preference for urban riverfront. Furthermore, the factors such as sex, age, and occupation seems to have only minor influences on the visual preference. The level of education is no difference in this case. |
