This essay seeks to chronologize the reciprocal relationship of architectural history and practice in Western and Chinese professional schools from the eighteenth century to the present. By exploring how the teaching of architectural history developed, it is found that, in the West, the status of architectural history varies dependent on whether it is required in order to practice architecture professionally. In the Chinese world, where historians and architects are less likely to collaborate, the interdependency between history and practice is not as strong as it is in the West. It is recognized that history is not a linear progress, but more like the concept of ”constellation” that was developed by Walter Benjamin (1892-1940). There is more than one way to understand the history of this subject, this essay presents just one of them. |
