This article examines the life and work of Lian Heng, a significant figure among Taiwanese literati. Lian Heng's lifelong devotion to the promotion of literature includes work in editorial jobs for journals and newspapers, the organizing of poetry societies, the opening of bookstores, the establishment of Chinese studies organizations and the publication of periodicals. To what extent did the policies of the colonial government and the modernization of Taiwan affect his practices in the promotion of Chinese studies, and what obstacles did this create for him? How were Lian Heng's circumstances representative of that of his contemporaries' and their ways of coping with the environment? These questions can help us to understand the changing face of Taiwan during the Japanese Colonial Period. |
