Peng Yu-lin(彭玉麟) (1816-1890) was a meritorious marshal of Hunan army (湘軍)in the late Qing dynasty. He ran the troops strictly and the emperor relied heavily on him. In Fact, he was famous for loving to travel Incognito and often rooting out the strong and giving people peace. The good deeds had even been adopted into librettos and became very popular. This research explored and examined those nearly lost librettos not only by its content, but also the images of Peng Yu-lin. The results can reflect the very unique of political and social conditions in the late Qing dynasty. However, the images of Peng Yu-lin were mostly negative and quite different from the truth. Therefore, the investigation attempts to uncover the virtue form of these librettos in order to provide some results and references for future study. |
