We conducted a research to investigate the life story of Shen Yi-fu, the writer of Yuefu Zhimi in southern Song Dynasty by using some less popular local records such as Wujiang local chronicles (Hongzhi) -Elite written by Mo Dan, (Ming Dynasty), the epitaph of Sun Geng-xian, the successful candidate in the highest imperial examination of Song Dynasty written by Shen Yi-fu (Song Dynasty), Zhenze local chronicles (Qianlong) written by Ni Shi-meng (Qing Dynasty), and etc. Firstly, we discussed his family background, academic background (passing the provincial civil service examination of Song Dynasty), birth and death date, and his association with Wu Wen-ying. Secondly, we inspected the changes and development of Bailudong Academy. We deduced his duration of being the director of the institution by studying the rule of director nomination as well as the meeting time and venue with Wu Wen-ying. Finally, we studied some stories happened after his retirement and back to his hometown, Zhenze, including the establishment of free schools, school for him to give lectures, Mingjiaotang, and ancestral hall (Sanxianci), association with the Niu's to be family friends, and being worshiped in the local elite ancestral hall after his passing. In fact, his picture can be found in Wujiang local chronicles (Hongzhi). In conclusion, what we have done will serve as supplementary information for The biography of Shen Yi-fu by Cai Song-yun. |
