This paper aimed to explore the theories of “Najia” and “hexagram-solar cycle relation”, as found in the section on I-Ching (Book of Changes) in the collection Liu Jing Tian Wen Bian. The study began with an analysis of interpretations on I-Ching by Han scholars, demonstrating that studies of I-Ching astrology are characterized by an emphasis on Xiang-Xu (forms and numbers). It then examined the origin of the two theories, one as a way to explain the practice and performance of alchemy according to lunar phases, and the other as a way to predict fortune based on the calendar. The results showed that the two theories, as interpreted by later scholars, evolved into various schools, thus creating an enormous I-Ching system of form and numerology. The primary purpose of this study is to present the concrete achievements made by scholars with regard to astrology and the calendar in studies of I-Ching, thus highlighting the comprehensiveness of Zhou-Yi philosophy. |
