The On-site study of Tang poems is a research approach I have developed for a decade. Its basic idea is to examine the truth written in Tang poetry by their interaction of facts and evidence. Since the times of ancient China, there has existed the dichotomy of the ancient poetic system (Gushi) and balladic (Yuefu) poetic system. Realism as a writing method is the internal demand of ancient poetry that emphasizes the author's need to write about real things and actual feelings to their readers. Thus, realism, writing, and references to things in the human realm is a poetic phenomenon that can be seen everywhere in the Chinese poetic tradition. In this paper, I bring forward six Tang poems as examples of writing realism in reference to things and through a practical research process, I elaborate how on-site study of Tang poetry involves lines written by Tang poets as evidence to establish and confirm facts according to poems. |
