Since the Mid-Ming Dynasty, criticism of popular novels had frequently appeared in notes, prefaces, postscripts and actual comments (Ping Dian). Zhang Zhu Po criticized Jin Ping Mei (The Golden Lotus) not only followed general assessments of "The Four Masterpieces" since Feng Meng Long, but also developed a new standpoint based on Jin Sheng Tan criticism ideas. He also indicated that his criticism was unprecedented and this made his comments (Ping Dian) full of creation consciousness.
