Located at the southern end of Taipei Basin, Toad Hill Settlement is geographically the gateway from Jingmei to Gongguan during the Qing dynasty, and is also a critical military base. Historically, it witnessed the setup of the agricultural laboratory during the Japanese colonial period, the “Sino- American mutual defense" after World War II, as well as the development of immigrant society. Because of the protection of military landscapes, Toad Hill Settlement bred rich ecological environment and supported hundreds of (both formal and informal) families to live there. The purpose of this paper is to present the conservation process of the Toad Hill Settlement from 2013 to present and to analyze the actions of social engagement during this period and its significance and influence on this urban settlement. In the case of Toad Hill Settlement, the residents still living there are the key elements, while the “Good Toad Studio" also plays an important role. The diverse ways of social engagement including dispute resolution, art intervention, and the reviewing system of cultural heritage, all create valuable publicness and social meanings. |
