The U.S. and Russia relations are a key factor of global security and stability. The relations are going through a difficult period because of different approaches to some important international issues. Both the current heads of the United States and Russia are seeking to reassert their “great power”, which is affecting the external policy. They have cooperated on some global issues such as anti-terrorism and anti-nuclear proliferation, but due to their differences in value and interests, they have limited options for cooperative action. From 2009 to 2012, these years could be referred to as the “good times” of US Russian relations. However, with the outbreak of the Crimean crisis in 2014 and the conflict in the Syrian civil war, the relationship between the U.S. and Russia started to get worse, leading to them both enacting sanctions on each other. In February 2019, both the United States and Russia announced their withdrawal from the “middle missile treaty,” making it possible that an arms race might start. This article focuses on the relationship between the United States and Russia after the Crimean crisis in 2014. |
