To investigate the changes and trends in the titles of paediatric clinical literature in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) within the past 50 years. All literature found in the medical journal database of Beijing Research Institute of TCM with titles pertaining to clinical paediatrics in TCM were investigated. First, statistical analysis was conducted on the ratio of all literature according to their disease names (ICD-9 codes); the literature was then sorted. Next, the disease names found in the literature were sorted by every 10 years, and the trend in the changes of the order of disease names and titles within each decade was analyzed. From 1949 to 2005 the majority of paediatric literature pertained to diseases related to the diarrhea and respiratory systems. As time progressed the changes and trends in paediatric clinical titles in TCM were: (1) literature regarding specific contagious diseases, such as poliomyelitis, pertussis, and ascariasis, significantly decreased in number; (2) allergic diseases, such as asthma, greatly increased in numbe; (3) the literature about Psychiatric disease, gradually increased; (4) the number of perinatalogical conditions gradually increased, and with it the number of articles titled with newborn, and premature infant also gradually increased simultaneously and concurrently; (5) the mode of combining Western and Chinese medicine has been gaining recognition; and (6) the ratio of literature regarding new therapeutic methods resulting from Western medical therapies being modified by Chinese medicinal formulas, such as aerosol therapy, enema therapy, and injection therapy, gradually increased. Paediatrics literature regarding diseases of the digestive and respiratory systems are still of the majority. Nevertheless, titles of pediatric clinical articles about TCM have significantly changed as time has progressed and as the environment has become more objective. |
