Three-dimensional (3D) printing involves the technologies of additive manufacturing, and is ordinarily used in rapid prototyping and rapid manufacturing. It is suitable in manufacturing small amount of customized products. Modern 3D printing can employ plastic, metal, and biological materials, and has the resolution and precision good enough for clinical applications. Constructs with complex shapes and intricate structures can be regularly fabricated by 3D printing. Complicated clinical needs can be fulfilled by proper designs and modifications assisted by computer. Symptoms and disorders in the foot and ankle are closely related to individuals' 3D anatomy and biomechanical functions of the lower limbs. Patients should be evaluated and treated individually by 3D technologies. With all the relative advantages, 3D printing technology is now getting an important role in the fabrication of insoles and orthoses, preoperative planning and surgical simulation, patient specific instrumentation, and patient specific implants in foot and ankle surgery. |
