Blood specimen collection is a critical step in medical treatment. Any mistake in the collection and transport of blood specimens can adversely affect patient diagnosis, delay treatment, or worse jeopardize patients' lives. Based on the 2012 statistics, the monthly average blood specimen rejection rate was 1.91% in our ward, which was significantly higher than our hospital average (0.92%). After analyzing potential causes of blood specimen errors, the primary causes were established: low cognition of the blood specimen collection, high percentage of specimens did not arrive at laboratory within 60 minutes after collection, and low rate of vacutainer utilization. To address these issues, the project team held several courses on blood specimen collection and transportation, cross-department review on specimen collection and transportation, review the storage and promotion of vacutainer, and review the storage and transportation of blood specimen. After the introduction of this project, our staffs can effectively reduce the rejection rate of blood specimens from 1.91% to 0.74%, successfully reaching the project's intended goal. |
