Legal Chinese is centered around the teaching of Chinese for Specific Purposes (CSP), with a goal of meeting the specific needs of the involved learners. Therefore, CSP courses must be based on an analysis of these needs. This article examines the theory of needs analysis, and applies it to the field of teaching Chinese for legal purposes. Data used in this study were gathered from international students at the college level who took the course of Legal Chinese in Taiwan. An in-depth analysis clearly shows that learners are most concerned about gaining practical legal knowledge in order for them to comfortably live and work in Taiwan. Moreover, learners also show great interest in the culture that fosters the practice of law, which suggests the significance of cultural aspects regarding the teaching of Legal Chinese.
