Film as teaching material in Second Language Education provides a new route for cultivating students’ linguistic competence and cross-cultural communication ability. Film has not been adopted in the field of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language until recent decades, but this approach has developed quickly as China’s film industry and market experience fast expansion and commercialization. Current pedagogical practice in teaching film in Chinese language classes focuses generally on narration of plot, analysis of characters, and discussion on social and cultural phenomena reflected in a film. Exploring a new approach, this paper suggests that instructors add an “association” component to the existing narration and discussion in a film-centered class. It proposes a theme-based pedagogical model that utilizes short movie clips. By giving two examples on the themes of homosexuality in China and Chinese migrant workers, this paper demonstrates how the pedagogical approach that links clips from different films within the framework of a cultural theme effectively helps students to develop more profound understanding of Chinese culture and to reflect on their own culture through various perspectives.
