Adolescent problem behaviors and domestic violence are human right issues of global concern. The objective of this research was to study early family experiences and related factors of domestic violence on problem behaviors during adolescence via empirical investigation. A sample population of 2,488 adolescent subjects was sorted into normal or deviant groups. Descriptive statistics, t-tests, F-tests, and regression analyses were used to observe the effects of domestic violence experiences, personal emotional attachment, different personal traits, and social factors on adolescent problem behaviors. Research results indicated that males affected by early domestic violence generally exhibited more serious deviant behavior than females. Subjects with lower levels of education tended to exhibit more deviant behavior and property crimes, violent crimes and sexual misconduct. In addition, older subjects committed acts of sexual misconduct at higher frequencies than younger subjects. There were similarities between different families that exhibited domestic violence, such as the occurrence of similar behavioral problems in those affected by domestic violence. Subjects that were the victims or observers of domestic violence had greater tendencies for deviant behavior. Maternal negligence was also a common factor among subject that had deviant behavior. However, stronger emotional attachments with their parents, families, and schools were found to reduce deviant behavior. Such behaviors included dislike of school, apathy towards academic performance, criminal acts such as property or violent crime. Based on results of this study, recommendations can be applied to future policies and research studies on adolescent problem behaviors. |
