本文旨在對熊十力《體用論》及其與《新唯識論》異同比較,進而解讀為何有「新論宜廢」的觀點,但本文不採一般哲學研究對其兩論內容作詮釋與評價,本文僅在透過對熊十力先生兩論成書其間學思行年的探究,以闡明何有言「新論宜廢」的價值判準。熊氏自言「與佛家唯識大體不符」作為一種文化上的解釋。故本文乃以於學術史視野下的考察。而經本文論述中考證,以為熊十力先生所謂「新論宜廢」其在文化信念上的意義大於哲學史著作上的意義,並以「返體全用」與「因用明體」對熊氏「體用不二」說作一釐定,在此釐定之下,乃知兩論之差異實為論述策略有所殊別。據本文考略,則《新論》為哲學史著作上的意義,則論述多具邏輯性,其詮釋多為創見。時至《體用論》,則文化意義大於哲學史著作意義,則多為承繼並將其「圓融地」說,詮釋多為「體證式」的語句。
