Cai Boyi was one of the earliest Taiwanese who became a Senior officer in the Taiwan Governor-General's Office during the Japanese colonial period. This paper examines the manuscript titled Yingmingji which includes many articles and poems written by himself or dedicated by Cai's friends both in Taiwan and China to him. The writings were written in the period from around 1923, when he decided to resign his post in the Office and go to China, to soon after the end of the Japanese rule. The manuscript are filled with the authors' compliments for his strong antipathy to the rule and lofty patriotic sentiment towards China. The focus of this paper is to analyze how Cai's career under the Japanese rule and in his 'motherland' China were described in those works whose basis was the image of 'patriot' Cai. It aims to clarify the way in which one Taiwanese intellectual was portrayed by his friends in Taiwan and China during 1930's and 1940's when Sino-Japan relation had been significantly deteriorated, followed by the total war between the two sides. |
