Japan is currently going through an enormous social experiment that has justifiably raised feelings of national pride, as well as genuine admiration for the boldness of its political leaders. Yet, many Japanese remain fearful and somewhat pessimistic about their future. This is indeed a natural response of the public to over two decades of stagnation and political logjam. Still the Japanese have much of which to be proud. A society and culture as rich and old as Japan's cannot be judged solely on the performance of its economic growth. The flowering of Japanese culture is of equal importance to the material gains it has enjoyed in the past. The heartfelt pride that Japanese now have for their country should not be measured only by money, and it cannot be bought with money. Focusing exclusively on economic growth invariably devalues the importance of national pride. Our daily life must properly balance our drive for material gains by also appreciating important qualitative aspects of life. Awareness, maintenance and appreciation for such old and established things are important aspects to a life that justify the admonition that the young generation should always acknowledge "something old and something new"for good luck. |
