Since 1895, the year that occupied by Japan, Taiwan faced the widespread subtropical diseases, such Bubonic Plague, Malaria, and environmental sanitation problems, so the Taiwan Government-General (TGG, Taiwan Sotokufu) brought in Japanese sanitation administration system and devoted to medical students training and medical research in order to develop tropical medicine in Japan. The establishments and activities of the medical school of TGG, medical school of Taihoku Imperial University, Tropical Medicine Institute were evidences for developing tropical medicine. This paper intended to discuss the developments and researches of those institutes and influences towards colonial medicine in Taiwan and Japan. The author also analyzed how the research results were applied while Japan expanded military activities towards the south of China and Southeast Asia during the Sino-Japanese and the Pacific War. |
