Using the Conversation Analytic approach, this study demonstrates the structural features of group discussions conducted by Taiwanese JFL learners. Examining turn-taking patterns of two groups' discussions uncovers that the conversations, supposedly ”free discussions,” consistently proceeded in a particular order (the discussion leader→a nominated participant→the discussion leader→a nominated participant), which reveals all the participants' strong orientation to the leader's role as ”a next-speaker nominator.” Moreover, the existence of the next-speaker nominator contributes to the construction of the participation framework in which the discussion leader becomes ”an addressed recipient” and other participants become ”non-addressed recipients.” Consequently, in such group discussion activities, each participant made a statement in turns, instead of negotiating opinions with each other. Further research will be required to resolve whether this result can be solely attributed to teacher's task design and instruction or to other factors (e.g., the participants' Japanese language competence). |
