Numerous literature has pointed out importance of having an intimate acquaintance with cultural and social phenomena in foreign language learning. Focusing only on difference between one society and other, however, leads only to relativisation of them, leaving learners only with comparison and remembrance of differences between them. Learners need a deep thought on universality and commonality of cultures and societies to overcome the situation that they only heap knowledge without actual experience on the foreign society, and it should be the only way to make the knowledge on Japanese society being on their own. This paper inspects a possibility of departure from the reproduction of relativised view of culture due to usual culture education, utilising the concepts of the TAE (Thinking at the edge) Steps. Graduate students of Japanese language are guided to make an attention to the details of contemporary phenomena of culture and society in Taiwan and Japan, then to observe the phenomena and practice the Steps to notify various features and commonality between the two societies. As a result, the student's understanding of other culture goes beyond clarification of ”difference”, and we observe an effect of realising their awareness to ”self-experience” in this era. |
