The outbreak of enteroviral infections in Taiwan in 1998 revealed the country’s qualitative and quantitative weakness in viral disease laboratories. The Department of Health (DOH) therefore began to establish contracted viral disease laboratories throughout the country in March 1999. In addition to funding laboratory hardware and software, a particular effort was made to upgrade the laboratories' viral infection testing and staff training capabilities. These contracted laboratories have played an important role in testing for enterovirus and influenza virus in northern, central, southern, and eastern Taiwan. |
