The purpose of this study is to investigate the major research and development (R&D) trends of bioremediation technologies as well as to develop the core framework through USPTO patent information. The Patent Co-citation Analysis (PCA) method was employed to classify the patents of bioremediation and the factor analysis technique was used to extract and conclude the major technology fields. The remainder of this study was organized as follows. Section 2 reviewed relevant literature. Section 3 illustrated the present landscape of bioremediation. Section 4 described the methodology and procedure of PCA. Section 5 demonstrated the empirical analysis of this study and at the same time explained the core technology categories. Finally, Section 6 provided conclusions and suggestions. The research result showed that the major R&D trends cover the fields of anaerobic degradation, aerobic degradation, anaerobic reductive dechlorination, bioaugmentation, and bioventing. This study effectively applied the PCA method and factor analysis technique to classify the patents of bioremediation and identify the main technology trends. The result of patent information analysis could serve as a reference for the future R&D on bioremediation. It was suggested for future works to consider how different environmental, economic, technological and social scenarios lead to corresponding bioremediation technologies. |
