The Purpose of this paper is to interpret Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in terms of Hans-Georg Gadamer’s concept of human finiteness. In this paper, I first explicate Gadamer’s concept of human finiteness. Then, I start to point out the elements that lead to the tragedy of the protagonists. In this play, not only the protagonist Romeo’s weaknesses of character but a serious of unexpected and uncontrollable accidents contributes to the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. And this play indeed well illustrates Gadamer’s concept of human finiteness. |
