Treatment for a Patient with Rapid Cycling Bipolar Disorder Using Maintenance ECT: A Case Report in Taiwan

Rapid cycling bipolar disorder (RCBD), defined as four or more episodes per year [1], withthe incidence of 20% of bipolar disorder [2], isknown to be a challenge to psychiatrists. Severalreports have shown electroconvulsive therapy(ECT) is effective in controlling RCBD [3], butothers still warn the risk of inducing rapid cycling.This report is to describe a patient with RCBDtreated successfully using maintenance ECT.
