In military psychiatry in Taiwan, we currentlyfocusing are on military suicide, and post-traumaticstress disorder (PTSD). Psychiatric servicein troops has been publicized mainly by socialmedia in Taiwan. Several concerns are valid inthose overt psychiatric problems – imbalance ofmanpower due to military re-structuring, the disrespecttowards military personnel by society, aswell as growing prevalence of substance use, andInternet games. We have seen varying degree ofanxiety, depression of military personnel due tothose problems in the faces of recent veteransdemonstrations in the streets in Taipei. The fi ndingsof a recent cross-sectional psychiatric surveyconducted on military personnel in Taiwan, haveshown that those with a low educational level, andphysical diffi culties, tend to suffer from sleep deprivation,depressive symptoms, and alcohol use. |
