Li Ming-che, a Taiwanese NGO worker, was forcibly seized by the Chinese government when he entered China via Macau on March 19, 2017. A rescue team consisting of members from Taiwan Association for Human Rights, Judicial Reform Foundation, Wen-Shan Community College and Covenants Watch, were very soon organized to generate domestic and international support for Li Ming-che. Among the various actions taken, an urgent appeal was filed aiming at the special procedures under the UN Human Rights Council and later taken up by the Working Group on Enforced and Involuntary Disappearances. This article details this rare example of Taiwanese NGOs employing UN human rights mechanisms in their efforts. |
