The purpose of this article is to provide teaching principles to Chinese teachers who are working in schools with oversea Chinese descendents. The principles of Teaching Chinese are nothing else but apperception and proficiency. Using the apperception principle well, teachers would see a collective result by teaching from simple materials to more complicated materials. Using the proficiency principle well, teachers would help students to transfer Chinese language from short-term memory to long-term memory by following the steps of testing, teaching, and re-testing until students well-comprehend the content. If the Chinese teachers can practice these two principles in Chinese teaching, the Chinese descendents oversea would consequently learn Chinese well in a very short time. Moreover, the situational teaching is one of the most important elements in teaching Chinese. Hence, how to make good use of the teaching situation would also be one of the most important focuses in this article. |
